It seems everywhere you look these days, there are trainers, celebrities and other fitness gurus spouting off about the ‘perfect workout.’
And we really want to know. Is there really such a thing?
We all have some extra weight we want to drop, some abs to tighten and some butt to lift… and we understand that there is no magic bullet. This will take hard work, commitment and dedication. We get that. But really, who should we be listening to?
I can’t count the number of hours I have put on the treadmill, the stairmaster (well I can’t even find a stairmaster now), and the eliptical and was sure I would burn off this fat and tone up like those models I see on television, (yeah I know they don’t eat)! How wrong I was!
Now, I’m not saying cardio is not the answer – but there is a very simple trick that make it work. Well, two tricks actually, that, if you incorporate them into your workouts, they will allow you to make the changes you are looking for.
No. 1 – Interval training – this is the key to your success. You must change your cardio program to one that includes intervals.
What exactly is Interval Training?
It’s a type of workout where you do one exercise (whether that be on a cardio machine, something like jumping jacks or any other activity that will elevate your heart rate) for a set amount of time…let’s say 30 seconds. And then you do an easier exercise (jog in place, slow down the cardio machine, or even walk) for another set amount of time…let’s say 1 minute, and then repeat the process for several “intervals”.
This constant change in intensity and duration is what will shed off the fat, not the type of training where you get on the treadmill, at one speed and just walk, jog, or even run until the timer reads 30 minutes, 45 minutes or heaven forbid…60 minutes!
I know this may sound like the opposite of what you have heard and read in the past, and trust me, it took me a long time before I finally decided that since what I was doing wasn’t working, it was time to try something else (which always reminds me of the definition of insanity…doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result…apparently I was insane.)
Next, or shall I say…
No. 2 – You must incorporate strength training into your weekly workouts.
Men are usually pretty open to this suggestion when I bring it to their attention, but ladies…those dumbbells, barbells and scary cable machines are not just for the fellas. If you want to see your legs, arms and especially your abs, transform, you gotta hit the weights!
That’s it! That’s all you have to do to create the body you have been working so hard to get.
