
For all our terrible flaws, we—humans—are an adventurous lot. Deeply lurking in our DNA is the need to step out of the cave and cross the boundaries, to get the heart thumping and the adrenalin, serotonin and dopamine endorphins pumping in primordial harmony.
We turn to sporting challenge: mountain-biking, hang gliding or maybe, the annual Naked Bungee Jump in Nanaimo, BC. But real adventure transcends mere risk to life and limb. It involves our sense of wonder.
I’m all in favour of physical adventure: I’ve hot-air ballooned over France’s Champagne region, soared over Oahu in a glider, parasailed in Mexico, dune-buggied in China and white-water rafted in New Zealand. But, when I think of great adventure, what comes to mind is climbing a Buddhist temple ruin in Burma to watch the sun rise over a vast plain of hundreds of ruined temples from a long-gone era. Made me feel like Indiana Jones.
